The Acer Liquid Android smartphone is set to get a new sibling called the Liquid Stream S110. This new model has passed through the FCC and revealed that it will sport 720p video recording along with a HDMI out.
Other features remain the same including the Snapdragon processor, 5MP camera, 1400mAh battery, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The phone is set to run on the GSM 850/1900 MHz frequency bands. There are no details on pricing but the phone is expected to land in October.
For those thinking of getting an additional battery for your Acer Liquid, it may be a good time to look at some extended batteries from trusted third-party battery manufacturer, Mugen Power. They have two extended batteries on sale for the Acer Liquid, one with 1550mAh capacity and another with a whopping 3100mAh capacity. As the Liquid comes with a 1350mAh battery, both offer an improvement over the default offering.
For those looking at the 3100mAh battery though, it’s worth noting that given the size, Mugen Power provides a new back cover for the phone. This means your standard Acer Liquid will be chunkier than normal with this battery. The sleek looks will inevitably be spoiled, but it seems like a great option for those who do a lot of travelling. Both batteries are in stock from the Mugen Power website right now. The 1550mAh battery will set you back $29.95, whilst the larger 3100mAh battery costs $71.95.
UK owners of the Acer Liquid awoke to a special present from Google this morning. The company has made available its turn-by-turn Google Maps Navigation (with voice directions) application to the UK from today. Up until now it has only been available in the United States, so today’s release will hopefully see Google Maps Navigation release across other European regions too.
Whilst initially only for Android 2.0+ devices, Google has also made Navigation available to those with Android 1.6 smartphones too. Therefore no need to wait for the big update. To get it make sure you’re running the latest 4.1.1 Beta, if you can’t see it, restart the handset. Check it out now.
Great news xda-developer fans, a dedicated Android app has been released that lets you view its forums, respond to posts, start new topics, check your PMs and subscribe to your favourite threads. This will be good to keep an eye on all the great modding/rooting work going on with the Acer Liquid.
The app is basically a skinned version of TapaTalk who have their own app that allows you to easily browse vbulletin/phpbb forums. You can find the xda-dev app by searching for ‘XDA’ in the Android Market. Check out a video of it in action after the break. [click to continue…]
Acer has announced an update to its Liquid Android smartphone dubbed the ‘Liquid e’. This new handset will come with Android 2.1 (Éclair) versus version 1.6 on the original Liquid. Other improvements include five homescreens upped from three.
There’s also a new keyboard layout, an updated Android browser (supporting HTML5) and live wallpapers. A new quick contacts feature has also been added that allows you to switch between the address book and social networking applications.
All in all, it sounds like a decent update, but I do wonder whether original Liquid owners will be able to upgrade their firmware to the same as the ‘Liquid e’. I can’t imagine there’d be too many happy people if this wasn’t the case. Check out the full specs after the jump. [click to continue…]
Stronger than expected sales of the Acer Liquid Android smartphone has led to shortages of the device. Quite impressive considering it’s only been shipping for the last couple of months and not even in that many regions. The demand has most likely been led by positive reviews and keen pricing.
“Liquid is doing much better than our expectation,” Gianfranco Lanci, president of the Taipei-based company, said in an interview yesterday. “This is why we’re a little bit short of supply.”
Acer initially expected to sell around 150k to 200k Liquid handsets by the end of his quarter, however it now expects to sell at least 250k. The Acer Liquid is manufactured by ODM Compal, Acer is planning another Android handset manufactured by Foxconn during this quarter.

Those of you paranoid about security may be interested to know that WaveSecure, the mobile security application, is available to download free of charge on all Android handsets (as long as you register before the end of January). Once registered you get free lifetime membership. It supports other phones (Symbian and Windows Mobile) too where they charge €15 for the app.
WaveSecure helps you to secure and track down a lost or stolen phone. It tracks down your phone’s location and who is using it and even allows you to lock it down remotely! As well as this, you can backup or wipe all of your data remotely. The app can be downloaded from the Android Market, just search for WaveSecure. Check out a video demo of it in action after the break. [click to continue…]
Up until now the Acer Liquid Android smartphone has only been available in white. Well, for those waiting for the black version, you can now get that credit card to the ready. It is now available at several retailers including Clove and Handtec for around the £330 mark. Now we’re just waiting for that sexy red version to make an appearance…

As many of you will know, each of Android’s major new releases have been codenamed after delicious bakery goods, as well as running in alphabetical order. So far we’ve had Cupcake (v1.5), Donut (v1.6) and Eclair (v2.0) and apparently the next iteration will be called Froyo i.e. frozen yoghurt.
Engadget got the scoop via a conversation with Erick Tseng, Senior Product Manager of Android at Google. At the moment, there’s no idea how substantial an upgrade Froyo will be over v2.1 (a minor update of the Eclair release) or when we might expect it. Now I’m just wondering what they could use for the letter G…
One of the most common questions facing current/prospective owners of the Acer Liquid is when are they likely to see the update to Android v2.0. Well according to Frandroid, the update should be hitting no later than March 2010.
They received word from Augustine Becquet, Director of Acer Smartphones France, on the timeline. It seems Acer is still considering on how it will deliver the update, whether it is OTA (over the air) or via the Acer support pages. We’ll keep you posted on further developments.
Thanks Magnus!
The Acer Liquid Android smartphone has been out for just over a week and the reviews are finally starting to roll in. The great news for prospective purchasers is that overall impressions are positive. Despite the handset not being as polished in the UI department compared to its rivals, it still manages to score marks for its snappy processor and responsive touchscreen.
On the negative side, the handset has a “plasticky feel”, the camera is button is hard to press and the keyboard can be unresponsive. Check out the reviews released so far after the jump. [click to continue…]
